Maintenance
- Check tyre pressures regularly and ensure the level of tread is well above the minimum legal depth of 1.6mm.
- Make sure fluid levels are topped up, including oil, wiper fluid (to the correct concentration to prevent it freezing)and antifreeze. Avoid a frozen fuel line by keeping your tank at least half full.
- Test the battery. Cold temperatures can affect battery power.
Stock Up
Be prepared. In the event that you are in an accident or become stuck, consider keeping essentials in your vehicle to keep you safe, such as: A blanket, hi-vis, warm clothes, torch, extra wiper fluid, warning triangle, and jump leads. For longer journeys, make sure you’re wearing warm clothes, a winter coat and proper footwear. Also, fully charge your phone before you leave or carry a charger.
Driving Tips
- Don’t stop when going uphill. Getting a heavy vehicle moving on a steep, icy hill is difficult and dangerous. Whenever possible, get some momentum going on a flat roadway before you carefully cruise up the hill.
- If you get stuck in snow, revving your engine to try to power through will make it worse. Instead, move your vehicle slowly backwards and forwards out of the rut using the highest gear you can.
- Stick to larger roads, that have been gritted.
