Commercial vehicle rental simply involves hiring a van, truck or trailer for a set period of time. It’s usually seen as a short term option and typically involves a daily rate being paid (although longer term contracts are available too if necessary).
Commercial vehicle hire is perfect for companies looking to react quickly to customer requirements – It enables them to add trucks and vans to their fleet for short periods to cover fluctuations in demand.
Once a vehicle hire agreement comes to an end, clients can either return the vehicle or keep it by agreeing an extension to the rental term.
Vehicle rental differs from contract hire and leasing in that the contract lengths are generally much shorter, giving customers even more flexibility to increase and decrease the size of their fleet to meet the demands of their business. Although contract vehicle leasing can offer better value for money in the long term, the financial commitment associated with vehicle rental is typically smaller.

Contract hire is a form of truck and van lease hire that gives businesses the option of hiring a van, truck or trailer for an agreed time period at a fixed monthly price.
Clients hire a truck or van for an agreed duration by paying a monthly fee. Maximum mileage limits usually apply.
Upon returning the vehicle, the client is liable for exceeding mileage limits and any repairs required.
The lease hire company owns the vehicle and is accountable for the associated risks.
Truck and van lease hire makes brand new vehicles more affordable – removing the risk of running older, unreliable vehicles.
Business contract hire allows VAT-registered businesses to claim back 100% of the VAT on truck and van hire.
VAT-registered businesses aren’t obliged to list contract hire vehicles as an asset on their balance sheet.
Unlike contract hire, finance leasing allows the client to pay the entire cost of the vehicle and keep it at the end of the agreed contract period.
The lease hire company retains ownership of a vehicle until the outstanding finance has been paid in full by the customer.
Ownership of the vehicle can be achieved in the following ways:
If the outstanding finance isn’t settled by the customer at the end the contract, the vehicle will be returned and sold to a third-party by the finance company.
Corporate fleet management is an option for businesses that are looking to outsource the management of their vehicle assets.
The service is a combination of technology-based solutions and process management – it typically involves fleet vehicle tracking, repair, servicing and route optimisation.
Fleet management solutions are designed to save businesses the hassle of running a fleet of commercial vehicles. By having specialist vehicle management in place, companies can ensure that everything is operating as efficiently as possible, minimising unnecessary expenditure.
